8 Fundraising Tips to Support your CDH Journey

Once you are given a CDH diagnosis, several things generally come to mind, one of which may be, “How Will I afford a CDH baby?” The idea of medical bills, time off work, and expenses related to relocating may make everything seem impossible. However, there are several things you can do to begin saving and help offset the cost. Here are some ideas:

Fundraising event

Host an Event - Hosting an event is a fantastic way to fundraise in your community and raise awareness. You can sell tickets to the event and provide food such as BBQ, burgers, or spaghetti dinners. Often you can find a church or local venue that will donate the space free of charge and possibly even a restaurant or local store to sponsor the food. You would be amazed by the community’s generosity, and often family and friends want to help but don’t know how. Hosting an event allows them to contribute financially and help support your family during this difficult time.

Have a Baby Shower - Often moms will say they decided not to have a baby shower because they feel uncertain about the future. It’s hard to think about having a fun day when life is so difficult, but please consider it. Every life is worth a celebration, and your CDH baby is no exception. If receiving baby products is too difficult, ask for gift cards to Walmart, Target, or restaurants near the hospital. This way, you can save the cards and buy the baby’s supplies when you know you are headed home, or you can use the cards for items and food you need while relocating.

Reach Out to CDH Charities - There are a few CDH charities that can help you find and afford quality care. Don’t hesitate to reach out to them and ask what types of assistance they can provide. Of course, Tiny Hero is here for you, but there are also others, including the CDH Foundation, Fore Hadley, and the Incredible Teddy.

Start a Facebook Fundraiser - Having a Facebook fundraiser allows people to easily donate to your family and help you along the journey. Some people feel it is tacky to create one for themselves, so if you feel this way, find a family member or friend and ask them to do it on your behalf. You will be glad to have a little extra money while away.

Consider the Ronald McDonald House - The RMH is a charity run hotel that allows families to stay for as little as $10 a night, and they often provide meals as well! It is definitely worth considering this option vs. renting an apartment as it will save a great deal of money overall. Also, if you don’t have the funds during your stay, they won’t ask you for the donation, so you can pay them back later when finances calm down. Some RMH (like the one at Johns Hopkins All Children’s) will even let you stay there before the baby is born, which is an incredible way to save even more money.

Breastfeeding Vouchers - Many hospitals have coupons that they give out to breastfeeding/pumping moms to encourage good nutrition. They will allow you to buy food at the hospital for free or for a reduced rate!

T-Shirt Sales - Designing a t-shirt for family and friends to purchase is another way to make a little extra money, and it is a fun way for your loved ones to show their support. They will love wearing their shirts on the day your baby is born or surgery day!

Garage Sale - Having a garage sale will allow you to raise a little extra money as well. You could even ask family and friends to donate items they no longer need for you to sell and profit from.

If you set your mind to it and get creative, there are lots of ways to save and earn money to support your CDH journey!
